The Essential
The Turks have a special affection for Bursa, which was their first great capital, conquered in 1326 by Ottoman sultan Ohran Gazi. Nothing was considered too beautiful for the city, and as a result its old districts are home to several jewels of early Ottoman art, souks, and narrow alleyways shaded by cypress trees and graced with refreshing fountains. Despite being an expanding modern city surrounded by ring roads and industrial areas, Bursa has retained its verdant parks and the curative virtues of its waters, already legendary during the time of the Romans. It is home to a number of Unesco sites.
