Church of St Saviour-in-Chora

Highly recommended
Chora means "outside the walls", and refers to the fact that this 11C church was originally surrounded by countryside - the garden behind the church acts as modest reminder of this fact and is a pleasant place to rest after admiring the finest mosaics (16C) from the Byzantine world. On a gold background and with a rare elegance and attention to detail, they recount the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The frescoes in the church are also quite remarkable. Contemporary with those of Giotto, they show the same mastery and realism as their Italian cousins from the Renaissance.
