The Essential
Highly recommended
Unbridled construction during the 1980s has devastated the landscape around Pergamon, making it difficult at first glance to understand the attractions of this city, which was the equal of Rome, Ephesus and Alexandria under Alexander the Great and Eumenes II, and a Unesco site today. To appreciate the city's appeals, stroll through the maze of flower-decked narrow alleyways. Few tourists take the time to do so, preferring to climb to the top of the vertiginous acropolis where the history of Pergamon can be glimpsed through its heroic remains.
