Fort Macleod
The Essential
Interesting
It was in October 1874 that Deputy Commissioner James Macleod decided to winter quarter his company, exhausted after a forced march through the Prairies to fight off American incursions and stop the traffic of whiskey, on an island of the Oldman River, thus creating the first Mounted-Police fort in the Canadian West. Fort Macleod is now a prosperous agricultural centre in a region of ranches and irrigated crops around Porcupine Hills.
