From 1966 up until the '70s, peace signs adorned many of the front doors, a VW van was parked on almost every block and a protest of some sort was the subject of constant telephone-pole posters. Nearby Vanier Park witnessed any number of sit-ins and demonstrations, and, when the entire city was virtually shut down by antiwar protests in March and April 1967, Kitsilano was at the heart of the unrest. The neighbourhood is now strongly attached to its pleasant lifestyle, erring between beaches, shopping malls and seaside activities.
