Lions Gate Bridge
The Guinness family used proceeds from their brewing enterprises to provide access to North Shore property developments, opening the bridge in 1938. The government bought it for $6 million in 1963, and at the end of the 20C, the span's increasing inability to handle all the traffic spurred numerous proposals to replace or expand it-ranging from adding another deck, to building a tunnel beneath the entire downtown Vancouver peninsula. In the end, superficial improvements were made, and all other schemes abandoned.
