Dresden
The Essential
The region was first settled by black slaves who fled the US seeking freedom north of the border. Josiah Henson, a Methodist pastor, left Kentucky with his family and arrived on this land in 1830. With the help of abolitionists, he founded Dresden that was to become a refuge for other fugitives. Harriet Beecher Stowe used him as the model for her influential 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.
