Lévis is located on the east bank of the St. Lawrence, opposite Quebec City. Founded in 1759 as a British redoubt, Lévis became a centre for timber exports to England in the 19C and later a shipbuilding centre. Today it is known for its port activities (wood industry) and as the birthplace and headquarters of the Desjardins cooperative savings and loan company. A ferry connects Lévis with Quebec City just across the river.
