When to go
Montreal is definitely at its best in Summer and winter. Summer means hot temperatures and festivals galore. Here are just two: Francofolies in June, during which French music takes pride of place and the Juste pour rire festival with a star-studded cast of comedians. Equally pleasant are walks or bicycle rides along the banks of Lachine or St Lawrence canals.
You may however prefer to go during the winter, which is cold, snowy and quite stunning: blue skies, open-air skating rinks, cross-country skiing on Mont-Royal and the magnificent Montreal illuminated festival in February, featuring food, decorations and a host of events.
Spring is humid and comes late, prompting Montreal’s inhabitants to welcome it with even more enthusiasm and pleasure. Autumns can be grim, except during the mild Indian summer in October which sets the woods and parks alight.
