When to go
The Indian summer, from mid-September to late October, is the ideal time to explore California because the temperatures are mild everywhere. October is when the Monterey Jazz Festival takes place, one of the most well-known of the West Coast. In November, the stars strutt down Hollywood Boulevard for the Christmas Parade in Los Angeles.
The winters are mild, except in the northern mountains, often snowbound and inaccessible. San Francisco is also invariably rainy. But if you are there around February, you will be able to see the week-long Chinese New Year celebrations.
The southern seaboard is more sheltered and the weather remains fine all year round. Summers are hot and dry in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, while along the north coast, fog occurs practically every morning and storms are frequent in the mountains. As for the deserts in the southeast, the thermometers rise to such dizzy heights that it becomes too hot to do much at all.
