When to go
Prove the gloomy clogs wrong about San Francisco’s climate and go in September or October. This period is in fact the city’s real summer. Treat yourself to a view of the Golden Gate Bridge beneath a bright blue sky, make the most of the discounts offered in many hotels and attend one of the countless free concerts that take place all over town.
Otherwise, from May to August, the bay is smothered in thick blankets of fog. Make sure you have a warm jacket to wrap around you when you leave the feverish Gay Pride parade in the last week of June. Every year, the final parade attracts several hundred thousand people in a supercharged electric ambience.
Another major event takes place in winter, which is mild and rainy, during the Chinese New Year between mid-January and March, depending on the year. This is one of the United States’ most colorful and exuberant festivals. It lasts for nearly a week and finishes with a huge parade that lasts for a whole day. Make sure you have lots of space left on your camera!
