The Green

Interesting
When New Haven was a Puritan colony, the town was laid out as a large square subdivided into nine smaller squares. Now a National Historic Landmark, the center square, or green, was reserved for the use of the entire community as pastureland, parade ground and burial ground, and has served as the heart of the downtown district since 1638. The upper green is characterized by its three early-19C churches.
