When to go
Each season brings its own distinctive quality to Washington. The mild, sunny month of April is the setting of the magnificently orchestrated Cherry Blossom Festival. It is the ideal season to explore Georgetown.
In summer, the firework display on July 4 Independence Day set the city alight. The thermometer also reaches record highs and the humidity levels in the city are practically unbearable.
The banks of the C&O canal are a riot of color in fall to the delight of walkers. Fall is mild, less packed with tourists and a perfect time to pay a visit to the Mall museums. Beware, however, winter arrives suddenly. Snow and cold are far from rare. If you are in the area in early December, don’t miss a major event on the Ellipse: the illumination of the Christmas Tree by the President of the United States, or at the end of the year, join the crowds and admire the White House’s Christmas decorations.
