Coral Gables Merrick House

The two storeys of George Merrick's boyhood home were added in 1906 to the foundations of the modest frame cabin that existed on the land Merrick's father purchased in 1899. Designed by Merrick's mother, Althea, this house built using oolitic limestone (coral rock) and Dade County pine is inspired by typical New England architecture but adapted to the region's subtropical climate. The interior is appointed with period and Merrick family furnishings, including Althea Merrick's Baldwin grand player piano. The surrounding gardens contain original trees, planted by the family.
