Fort Caroline National Memorial

Interesting
Fort Caroline was established as a New World outpost in 1564 by some 300 French Huguenots, but then taken over by Spanish forces shortly thereafter. Displays in the visitor centre highlight French attempts to build a stronghold in America, with exhibits including period weapons, tools, armour and Timucuan (American Indian) artefacts. From the visitor centre, a short path leads to a replica fort on the south bank of the St Johns River.
