Reliance Building

Recommended
Years ahead of its time (1895), this building by Charles B. Atwood) foreshadowed the glass and steel skyscrapers of Mies van der Rohe and the Second Chicago school. The building exemplifies the possibilites inherent in skeletal frame construction. Its façade is almost entirely glass, with piers and spandrels featuring Gothic ornamentation. In 1999 it was restored as the Hotel Burnham, but you can still see the original ironwork elevator grills and the marble mosaic floor in the elevator lobby.
