The Essential
The heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass Country, Lexington was founded in 1779 and soon became a center of learning, wealth and culture. A group of erly 18C Federal and Georgian mansions are clustered in the 12-block Gratz Park Historid District. Today Lexington maintains a vibrant mix of educational, cultural and business interests, although the horse industry still forms the backbone of the local economy. With hundreds of horse farms, two racetracks and Thoroughbred auction facilities, the area still reigns as the "Horse Capital of the World."
