Basketball Hall of Fame
Basketball was originated by Dr. James Naismith, whose Springfield College team played the first game in 1891. The game was adopted by the YMCA three years later, and by 1936 it had gained international recognition and acceptance as an Olympic sport. Exhibits trace the development of the sport from amateur to professional and international status. Life-size action photos of such basketball greats as Wilt Chamberlain and Bob Cousy, videotapes of unforgettable coaches in action on the sidelines, film clips of the celebrated Harlem Globetrotters, and a selection of uniforms, equipment and memorabilia constitute the displays. Recently refurbished, the Hall is loaded with state-of-the-at interactive exhibits.
