Canterbury Shaker Village
Attracted by the serene countryside and the gift of a large tract of land in Canterbury, the Shakers established a community near the village of Canterbury Center in the 1780s. Founded in the 1780s, the village was formally organized in 1792, the year the meetinghouse was built, and grew to include some 300 residents. Today 25 original buildings still stand on 694 acres. As in other Shaker communities, residents here made their own clothing, tools and furniture.
