When to go
New York never sleeps.
As you are going to walk a lot, the mild spring weather in May and June is the most pleasant; the sky is bright blue and New Yorkers slip into more casual wear to go picnicking on Sundays in Central Park.
The summers are very hot and on July 4 Independence day, the city goes wild celebrating. Later, some will flee to the beaches along the coast while others remain in town to make the most of the summer activities (free concerts in the parks, etc) and a holiday atmosphere reigns over the hot tarmac and skyscrapers.
Late September is magical thanks to the Indian summer, however fall cools down significantly. Macy’s Thanksgiving’s Parade on the 3rd Thursday of November is the event of the season when amazing decorated floats and giant hot-air balloons parade through the city.
The winters are harsh when the blizzard blows, but if you’re well wrapped up, you will enjoy the stunning Christmas decorations and the effervescence that grips Times Square on December 31. Don’t forget that New York is frequently snowbound.

New York’s mythical yellow cabs are available for hire if the number on the roof is lit up. All cabs have a meter and the price of a ride depends on the distance covered plus a pick-up fee ($2.50). Surcharge for night rides (8pm-5am) and during rush hour (Mon-Fri 4-8pm).
Bicycling, due to the hectic traffic, can be dangerous and many tourists prefer to stick to the parks for bicycling.
