Morris-Jumel Mansion

During the American Revolutionary War, in 1776 George Washington used this mansion, built eleven years earlier, as his headquarters. It was then home to the Jumels, a couple of rich French merchants which explains its Empire style. The outside is characteristic of the Federal style with its wooden façade and porch. Originally, the estate extended from one river to the other! The interior is a window into the lives of the upper-class of the era.
