Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)

Recommended
The Eastside's major attraction is housed in a 1992 brick-and-glass building beside the Willamette River on the site of a former power plant. OMSI features an outstanding array of hands-on exhibits, an Omnimax Theater, a planetarium and a submarine. Allot extra time for a visit to the Omnimax theater, the planetarium and the submarine. The five-story Omnimax Theater shows three different films daily on its enormous super-70mm screen. Here, too, there is a Changing Exhibit Hall, a well-stocked science store and a cafe. The Murdock Planetarium boasts a 52ft-high dome onto which multimedia astronomy and laser-light shows (45min) are projected, featuring state-of-the-art visual and sound systems. The adjacent Physical Science Turbine Hall occupies the former power plant and is loaded with hands-on activities that allow kids to build bridges, launch boats and design and test aircraft. Just beyond, Busytown is a new creative play area for younger children. On the second floor there are three interconnected gallery areas with a dizzying assortment of activities for kids of all ages to enjoy.Moored in the river behind the museum is the U.S.S. Blueback, the nation's last diesel-electric submarine, built in 1959 and decommissioned in 1994. Guided tours (40min) lead visitors through the cramped quarters of this sub, which was featured in the 1990 movie The Hunt For Red October.
