When to go
Your choice of season for a trip to the American Southwest will depend on what you enjoy doing.
The mild early fall is ideal for hiking or exploring cities; San Francisco, for example, is particularly pleasant in September.
The winter skiing season can be very harsh in the mountains and some roads are closed due to snow. It is however ideal to go hiking in Death Valley, although temperaturs can drop below freezing at night-time. Along the seaboard the winters are mild and rainy in the north and hot in the south.
Spring is pleasant but comes late in the mountains. The meadows and parks are decked in flowers and prices are low, although some of the roads to the Grand Canyon can remain closed up until June.
Summertime is very hot in the deserts and inland cities, fog is frequent along the coast from Santa Barbara to Oregon, and the most popular sites are packed to the seams.
Los Angeles, however, enjoys a delightful climate all year long.
