Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens
Although these gardens are noted for their 10 acres of rhododendrons, the forests of fir, hemlock, cedar and lush ferns on the remaining 43 acres are equally inviting. On the bluffs above Holmes Harbor, the gardens were initially planted by Ann and Max Meerkerk in the 1960s. Now administered by the Seattle Rhododendron Society, they boast a collection of almost 2,000 rhododendrons from throughout the world. A harborside trail through a lush fern grotto offers a good vantage for spotting the whales and bald eagles that frequent the area.
