Darwin, the isolated capital of the Northern Territory, is an islet of modernity surrounded by hostile nature. A melting pot of influences, the city and its modern architecture are home to the army, hot-shot suits and a significant Aborigine community. If the somewhat brash and noisy city centre gets too much for you, head out to the emblematic sites of Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Arnhem Land for a welcome breath of fresh air.
