Fremantle Prison

The only one of the country's major sites charting the history of its convicts to have been classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this colossal prison takes visitors back to the foundations of modern Australia and its forced settlement by convicts. Between 1855 and 1868, nearly 10 000 such detainees passed through this penitentiary, which they built with their own hands. The prison now offers classic guided tours as well as a Tunnels Tour, to explore the labyrinth of tunnels dug by the convicts under the prison.
