The capital of Minho, a major industrial, economic and university centre, underwent a sudden metamorphosis. For a long time deemed a conservative and pious place, today it has a strikingly young population, plenty of cultural offerings and a lively pedestrian centre. Braga is famous for its Holy Week and summer solstice (St John) festivities and for its wealth of churches and convents.
